Miniature Schnauzer Puppy Care

Getting ready to bring a miniature schnauzer puppy home requires some preparation before the arrival of a puppy. Welcoming a new puppy is a very exciting time for our new puppy families! Our goal as a responsible miniature schnauzer breeder is to assist you in helping make the transition from our home to your home a smooth one.  To make this happen we are here to provide you with helpful tips and information. Advance preparation and planning before the arrival of your new puppy will help ensure a smooth transition for your puppy. We want the best possible start for our puppies in their new homes and are committed to helping and assisting our customers prepare for their new puppy.

Things to Do to Prepare for Your Puppy

1. Schedule an appointment with a licensed veterinarian.

It is very important to schedule your new puppy a vet appointment for a health exam in advance before the puppy arrives. As part of our health guarantee agreement we require you to take your new miniature schnauzer puppy to a licensed veterinarian within three business days of receiving a puppy from us in order for our health guarantee to be valid.  The puppy will be examined by our licensed veterinarian prior to leaving our care.  We will provide you with the puppy’s vet issued Certificate of Health. It is important to find a knowledgeable veterinarian and one you feel comfortable with. A good veterinarian will be your dog’s next best friend.

2. Puppy proofing your home and yard.

It is extremely important to keep your miniature schnauzer puppy safe from things that could possibly cause harm to your puppy. Look at your home and yard from a dog’s point of view. In order to do so get down on all fours and look around. Look for things such as loose electrical wires, cords dangling from blinds, and other things that could be chewed on or could cause harm to your miniature schnauzer. Whatever you see your puppy will see too!

• Keep household cleaners, chemicals, medicines, and other personal products out of the puppy’s reach.
• Put all household plants out of reach that are dangerous to dogs: poinsettias, azaleas, rhododendrons, dumb cane, Japanese yew, oleander and English ivy, to name a few.
• Store breakable items safely out of the way.
• Hide or cover electrical cords so your puppy won’t chew on them.
• Safely store antifreeze, engine oil, laundry detergents and lawn chemicals.
• Keep kids’ toys off the floor, since some parts may be small enough for your puppy or dog to swallow.
• Use a cover and/or protective fencing if you have a pool or a hot tub.
• Inspect your fence thoroughly. If there are any gaps or holes in the fence you will need to fix them.

3. Shop for items your miniature schnauzer puppy will need.

Shopping for you new puppy is the fun part about getting a miniature schnauzer puppy! There are several things you will want to have on hand before your puppy arrives. This way instead of worrying about rushing out to get all of these supplies right away, you can focus all your attention on your new companion. In a day or two you can take your puppy shopping with you to get a collar and leash that fits properly.

Puppy Food Recommendation

It is important to buy your puppy food in advance before the arrival of your puppy.  We recommend feeding pawTree Real Chicken & Sweet Potato food. You will want to continue feeding your puppy this food at least for the first few weeks. If you decide to switch to a different brand, be sure to mix in the new food gradually as to help prevent giving your puppy an upset tummy.

Important Information Regarding the Safety of Your Puppy!

It is crucial for you to understand you may unknowing place your new puppy at risk. Your puppy could die if you do not take the necessary precautions to keep your puppy safe from communicable diseases such as parvo and other viruses. With this in mind, it is extremely urgent that you do not take your puppy to any high traffic dog parks or let them out on any unknown grounds to go potty on the way home. If you are picking your puppy up in person be sure to bring a travel crate and some puppy pads. It is much safer for your puppy. You puppy is not protected against these communicable diseases and viruses. At around 16 weeks of age is when a puppy should have received the full series of core vaccines. We highly recommend you take strict precautions to protect the health and well being of your puppy.
